Fortunately I had an image of my hard disk. I just had to restore it. I just updated my windows 10 on my Lenovo Flex 2 laptop and not one of my programs vanished, and yes I do have the latest version of CCleaner on it. The only problem I had was that once everything in the icons tab in the lower right froze and would not work, but after I shut it off, counted to 30 and then rebooted the laptop, everything has been working fine since then.

It has broken the associations between desktop personalize and Settings and Windows Upgrade link has vanished from Control Panel. My Windows button on the Start bar is dead on left click and so are Notifications and a number of other links.

Had to re-install all three. Odd about the printer drivers; assuming the printers are fairly popular Win 10 ought to have had drivers for them. You have very little control. There are bugs and problems to deal with.
One of my favorites is a need to turn off antivirus software before running the installations. I eventually did a clean reinstall not of but of the original Win 10, then did the upgrade with no further issues so far.
And an odd side effect; the bluetooth system now works for the first time just using the drivers that came with Win 10 as opposed to those from the mobo provider. When my PC restarted after the update, it said Speccy and Ccleaner was gone.

I am going to wipe the disk and buy Windows 10 disk and start all over again. On the first big update, I ended up losing my start button, Cortana and my task bar. So, had to create a new user account in order to allow me to use my start button to get at the updates.
I have no sound. My sound was working fine prior to the last update I did. Really dreading going to Windows 10 so soon. Should have waited six months or so to workout all the bugs. Probably should have stayed at Windows 7.
Same situation for me on the sound issue, it was working fine before the update, then sounded like a dalek afterwards. It also brought back things that I had previously removed such as Get Skype when I already have the desktop version thank you.

I noticed couple of days ago that one of the users on the Win10 desktop had an error with the start button and was getting logged out every time she hit it. Turns out her profile was corrupt as was the default profile.
I copied her data to another safe place, deleted her profile and then found I could not create any new users, local or otherwise. Some digging led me to the solution of deleting the default profile and replacing it with a copy from C: Where I work we use only Windows 7 Enterprise with no plan to upgrade to Windows 10 in the foreseeable future.
MS Office 10 of course is fine and I assume whatever MS Office version 7, I would have would also be fine; as I said above, I suspect all of my personal settings are back at default…this is not good. My daughter has Windows 7 Professional on her laptop and everything is perfectly fine with her.

I am an American citizen and I live in Vienna, Austria and therefore a considerable time zone difference with the states. The only thing the Nov. The version of cCleaner I was using was not the most up to date last version before this current v5.
I am wondering if the old version had something to do with its removal. I have installed newest version of Piriform cCleaner and it works well. I have AMD Catalyst Control Center for Radeon and nothing there with those drivers was touched; like it has been suggested to watch out for.
I also waited to do this update until today, Dec. For those of you who are having trouble with using Piriform cCleaner you are either using other software that is not compatible with cCleaner or you are not using cCleaner properly.
Stick with what you have and find another compatible program that does the same as cCleaner. It will take some research to find out if your current software and system are compatible with using cCleaner.
Search questionable registry names on internet if you do not know exactly what it is. Ask someone who knows what that registry might be, as well. Never forget to do a registry back up. Of course cCleaner has to detect that a registry is questionable for removal for it to show up on its list, so in most cases such necessary and hard coded registries will not be detected.
However, sometimes by mistake cCleaner may think that something is a possible threat when, in fact, it is not. So really read and know about what registries your considering removing. There are many other programs besides cCleaner that can do this, and Windows Defender has this feature as well.
Read reviews and message boards before going with any cleaning software. And, if in doubt back up your system before doing anything. Our entire company has been hit hard with this windows 10 failure. And to make matters worse microsoft has been of no help at all through this. Microsoft has lost all credibility with us. That makes no sense at all. Win 10 is not perfect, but any firm carefully rolling it out would not see all remote users locked out unless someone did a mass rollout without being careful and testing properly beforehand.
Most IT departments create test builds of a new OS version, try them against updated software from vendors, and do this in a controlled environment. Of course, if your company has only 1 PC…. Missing as in — no desktop or taskbar icon — no trace of it anything under Piraform in either Program Files folders — a search for CCleaner coming up empty —.
I downloaded a fresh copy and ran the installation — and as far as the system was concerned, this was a first-time installation of CCleaner and took me through all the first-time setup options.
This update has wiped out my Office Program as well as my Outlook folders, addresses, etc. Tried to recover from windows. Any idea where the rest of my private folders may be? This also happend to me, Windows 10 update the other date at work, after the restart all my office applications had gone.
How wrong I was. The install process went smoothly without any issues, and after about an hour or so Windows 10 was running on my tablet, so far so good… or so I thought. This was enough to infuriate me already. The right thing for Microsoft to do would have been to tell me that the offending program may be incompatible and if I would like it to be removed, not remove it without my consent and then inform me of the removal afterwards.
There was no tutorial to show me how to switch to desktop mode, it was buried under a small icon at the bottom right corner of the screen which is just downright un-intuitive and user-unfriendly.

Windows 10 worked fine on my home built desktop. I mainly use it for gaming, Internet. A few weeks back, I noticed the start button and Apps list stopped working. When the repair finished, most installed programs were gone. Everything from games, Flash, Firefox, through my security software.

If they, in fact, can cause this new Windows 10 to destroy programs and motherboards on personal computers that owners of PCs have purchased in good faith, then, Microsoft SHOULD pay for the item, the loss and other loss considerations.
Not so much at upgrading to it or between major releases. Day to day use is smooth and fast, and actual feel is not much different then Win 7. The updates have been pure hell. For instance, System Reserved Partition suddenly goes from normal to no space left, and then update fails — when I ran upgrade through Windows Update.
More problems when I used the Media creator directly; and it may have been USB related based on speculation I read online from the weird error message. I plugged the 2 items back in and they work normally as well.
Oh, and no software except MS games and gadgets disappeared — not even CCleaner. I had piles of trouble upgrading versions of Win 10 on another system and ended up having to do a clean installation of release Win 10, then the update to When it was all done, system was normal — and for the first time, the Bluetooth dongle on the mobo actually worked.
I have varying versions of office — , Office and, and they all work well also. I can only offer some suggestions. Do a full backup anyway. Turn off any antivirus. Be prepared to check the System Reserved Partition go into Disk Management, assign a drive letter, check space free, truncate USN log if needed, then deassign drive letter, disconnect any and all USB devices that are not critical to the upgrade, and use a flash drive or DVD flash drive should be faster populated by the Media creator to run the upgrade.
Some are not even documented by MS yet they generate MS error codes. That is beyond absurd — but not new — MS knows better. MS has lots of people testing 10 — but does nowhere near enough testing of the upgrades.
Ok I have all the issues with the update. So who do I need to do to get this laptop running again all I can do some simple work like type up a document. Or perhaps the flash drive you must have copied all these critical documents to.
Of course, assuming you upgraded from Win 7 or 8. I use both laptops or running music and backing tracks for amateur singers…. One uses Realtek the other Conextant. Just don't run it every 2 minutes to the extent that Windows can't keep up with repairing itself, and then shit on Windows.
Everybody else likely is just going to be speculating. Blaming the OS for someone using a registry cleaner is like blaming the car for breaking after putting water in the gad tank. It defaults to "clean" read: Not just the registry which doesn't need cleaning every nanosecond, if at all nowadays.
If you run it as standard, RIP search indexing. So in effect, by taking the time to go over the list of applications to clean and unchecking "MS Search" you'd be fine? Those are just the obvious things that break.
There are more subtle problems that may crop up think: Windows update fails to install months later because of other things. The registry is just a database, and touching it is opening up a can of worms. XP was considerably more liberal with what it did to the registry, and as a result you ended up with a bunch of crap in there that did affect system performance.
Vista and newer does not suffer from the same problem. XP was a child who threw their toys around and never cleaned them up. Vista onwards had grown up and knew to put their toys backed where they belonged. Apparently, CCleaner is the weird step-sibling that pulls the head off of figures and sets fire to things that look like they'll burn.
Microsoft push the UI and the UX: If Windows was a car, most people would say that the steering wheel, pedals and visibility UI are the most important part with the AC, radio, seats etc. UX being the second most.
The registry is the engine, the wheels and everything in between, the bits that actually make the car do things once you've used the wheel and pedals. It's many other things as well. Indexing is just one example. The BSOD is just running it, or in some cases having it installed because of run on startup.
If you disable everything bar registry cleaning to make buggering up Windows less likely, you're just limiting yourself to something that is unneeded in modern Windows. It's not needed for you maybe, but what about my shitty hp stream with its 32gb SDD?
Only 9gb for me to use, and windows update basically killed the rest. You don't need HP restore partition on 10 device. Just reset your Windows installation look in Settings app with option to fully remove everything on the drive slow mode.
Apparently that partition is not deletable. The laptop came with 8. And it seems like it's undeletable according to this discussion. If you do full reset, the utility will remove that partition.
I've done it to multiple 8. Just make sure you select slow option. Actually, Windows 10 also j has all drivers so you don't need a single thing from OEM. Lol, apparently you can never delete it. It's on a protected partition and I can't even touch it with diskconfig.
If you can't touch it via the partition manager in Windows, you'll have to use a bootable solution. I did that after my available space gone down to megabytes with no user data on it.
Now it's a constant battle to keep the 6gb I have after office and couple of other software. I will never buy a 32gb windows laptop again. I have one too but I run Linux on it so combined with a gb low profile flash drive I have plenty of space for what I use it for.
The point of my post was to get some more factual answers than that. How would you back that up? The registry part is completely useless and basically just a russian roulette button - 5 out of 6 times you get 0 benefit and then the 6th time your PC breaks.
CCleaner has 0 benefits, but introduces the risk of breaking your PC. So why ever install it? Because it has zero positive benifit. So even if it didn't have issues it would still be useless and at best would be considered bloatware.
Please don't think I'm just arguing for the sake of it but - have you contacted Piriform about this? Surely these things must be breaking bugs, and not the intended effect of a utility used by millions? They will know of the bsod issues and the search and Cortana issues.
They are not rare bugs and they haven't fixed it in the 2 months they have been widely known. Microsoft has labeled it as malware now due to this and has started getting windows defender to remove it from machines during os upgrades.
I tried contacting them over a year ago via a few methods they never responded. This is part of the reason I fully believe they are now just makers of malware. Even if they originally intended to make a good product. Any source for the statement that Defender labels it as malware?
The thread on piriform is an upgrade-based thread. I believe Forman's comment there is unrelated. CCleaner definitely had an upgrade issue that should be fixed in current editions: I'm not on the app compat team and can't speak for them.
If you want details, contacting CCleaner would be a smart idea. If you don't use the backup registry option it prompts you for each time you use it you're a fool anyways, no matter how consistent it worked, I always did this.
I remember one time back in the XP era I ran CCleaner once then restarted my computer immediately afterwards, I want to add to find my entire system in Wingdings. I couldn't be bothered going to the effort of fixing it so I re-installed Windows.
Never properly trusted CCleaner's registry cleaner after that. Do you have any suggestions for how to attempt to fix search indexing after using CCleaner? I've already tried rebuilding the index with no luck.
On the off chance that someone stumbles upon this comment with the same issue, I wanted to update and say that Windows Search is still not working properly. I don't know whether or not it is a result of using CCleaner.
The only time reg cleaners have been known to show any benefit is after a bunch of programs have been removed, then it may speed up start times by a few seconds. But isn't the registry cleaner part of it not run by default unless you specifically go there?
Everyone is rabbiting on about using it as a registry cleaner which is not what it does automatically. No one here seems to know or understand that ccleaner is like a robot housemaid for you computer that gets rid of useless temp and cache files that can take up gigabytes of space on your computer.
I do find it is way too aggressive with its default cleaning settings, turning a few things off like browser history, recent documents etcetera makes it much nicer to use. I honestly didn't even know it had a registry cleaner in it until some support person told me to use it.
The OS's version of indexing is crap, I run everything. Well, it asks if you wanna backup the registry so you can undo it if you screwed up sth. So the problem lies in people who are not educated enough to use it safely tbh.
Cleaning old registry entries were useful during old times. Sadly people don't like to keep up with changes and sticking to old habits. Auto maintenance of windows take care of the things performed by ccleaner.
People just don't know it or have maintenance switched off. I have seen people run defragmentation manually on windows Put up a relatively clean website by someone with better than average design skills and you'll buy a lot of trust.
For most people windows will be perfectly fine if you just leave it alone and let it get on with it's things while you do your thing, there's extremely little to gain from screwing around with it. I'd love to see a survey done: I expect most responses would be either "Ummm?
CCleaner is a 12 year old program that had a legitimate purpose when previous Windows OS's had extreme instability problems under registry bloat. It's obvious since the program was so successful that they would continue developing it, so likening it to some kind of nagware is just as ignorant as those using it inappropriately.
After 30 years Microsoft's reputation has led people to believe that CCleaner is necessary, because if you've ever worked on computers for a living you'd know it had its place. Microsoft literally endorsed registry cleaning not too long ago, only to remove it because the new OS's are now stable enough to not need it.
Further instability of using registry cleaners is obviously expected when I can irrecoverably damage my OS by updating my Surface Pro 3 without even using CCleaner. CCleaner is still a great utility for file management if you're a power user, but most people have been ingrained with the idea that Windows is sloppy and will junk itself up if one isn't careful.
I have never used a "registry cleaner". I have never had a problem with "registry bloat", and I challenge anyone to show me a case where this actually is a problem. I take this back, actually.
But it only removed references to nonexistent files. I wasn't sure it was a good idea then, but I still did it, and I don't think any better of it now. Both terms have been irrelevant since, probably, Windows 7. CCleaner is only being roasted now because it's causing a lot of issues where it was innocuous before.
It's beneficial for getting rid of orphaned entries that aren't related to any software that's currently installed. The only time that's really useful, though, is if you plan on going back through certain areas of the registry by hand.
A lot of times the symptoms you're experiencing may not be obviously tied to a run of ccleaner. For example, an update that comes down three months later that fails to install. I'm sick of people blaming 10 for all of their problems.
They do, but if you don't update to that version Windows will automatically uninstall CC when it does its own update. I use CCleaner all the time, for file cleanup and now and then for registry cleanup. Never had a problem, never had Defender flag it.
I don't use Cortana, but my search works just fine. Just wanted to add a comment in favor. Cortana has been disabled since day 1. Never once had an issue with ccleaner. But then again, i reimage my computer evey few months as well.
I've been using the cleaner bit on w10 ever since I installed it. Not a single problem to date and Cortana works just fine. Just don't let it muck with MS search. I used it for years without a single issue to clean out the trash everyone and their grandma dumps into the registry, first time i used it in windows 10 it broke every single built in app and had to roll back to get them working again.
Regular crap cleaning still works fine for me though, only the registry filters are really bad in windows 10 so can't clean out the crap in there. If only program devs would stop being lazy and get their shit together and make their programs clean up after themselves when uninstalled instead of leaving all their crap behind.
So, After restoring to normal with image backup file, windows. I see you have the 32bit installation? I don't know if that could cause any of your problems. There isn't a choice. Ccleaner detected a bit OS and therefore offered a bit version.
That is what I mean - you are running a 32bit OS! I'm running 64 bit Also to correct my issue, I tried the windows 10 Reset option just to see what it involves, the time it takes to complete, what are the after effects of doing it.
After the Reset of OS, all apps work correctly I did not have to reinsert OS key, and all my personal files were intact and functional. Then I just went down my downloads folder list and installed everything 1 by 1.

I checked with two antivirus programs. Problem continues, sometimes taking complete control of the PC. The only program I loaded before the problem started was CCleaner. I deleted CCleaner with pain in my hart.
However, the problem didn't end. Somehow, it corrupted my system. I asked a professional consultant from Microsoft to fix it, and he tried with advanced antivirus tools. If you want to see what happens start the Windows "Task administrator" and see how CPU is used very intensively even if you dont start any application.
It is really bad. Hope Pririform staff and Windows staff find a solution to this. In the meantime, the only options that come to my mind are return to Windows 7, or change to a Apple computer.
I have attempted to follow the forum string on the Window 10 removing CCleaner. However, I could not find a solution to my problem which is this. I originally downloaded CCleaner about 12 months ago - without any problems.
I recently upgraded to windows 10 and started to get the message "your app isn't compatible with windows insider preview" every time I started my computer. I then did the following: That message indicates that you have signed up to the 'Windows Insider' programme, which is a beta testing programme.
As these are not fully released versions you can expect to have some problems with them, that's why they need testing. Microsoft give a list of known issues with the version as they release it to insiders, and insiders then test it to try and find any other problems.
As you seem to be running an insider build then your problem may well be with Windows rather than CCleaner. Did you mean to sign up to the insider programme, or did you mean to get the stable release of Windows 10?
The latest stable version for normal users is, released in November, and the build is The latest Insider build is, that was released on Jan 13 If you have signed up to the insider programme by mistake then you can leave and switch back to the stable version.

Firefox and Chrome Antivirus: I have never had an issue. And believe me, they are up2date and have the correct drivers. Did you know that Windows 10 will evolve into "Windows Service"? No, I think people are just early adopters and grinds through the pain. Sure you will lose 10 min extra installing them again big deal.
